Goals:

  • Be able to identify sedimentary rocks
    • Use charts for rock types based on texture, chemical content, sorting, grain size
    • What will each mineral look like in a rock?
    • Match the rock with the photo of the environment of deposition
    • Sift by grain size and make a pocket grain size card for the field
      • plot up the grain size distribution for that sand sample
  • Be able to identify metamorphic rocks
    • Use charts for rock types based on texture, mineralogy
    • Make a more complete metamorphic rock identification tutorial/chart by synthesizing the lecture material - turn in at end of class?
    • Use the T,P charts from lecture to answer: if you apply a given T and P condition to the various igneous and sedimentary rocks we have studied, what type of metamorphic rock would you get and what metamorphic grade is this and what metamorphic facies is this?
  • Practice, practice, practice!
    • Mineral samples, igneous rock samples will be available for more practice/comparison
