Scaffold data exploration by providing a choice array.
Object vs Spatial Visualization
- Dorsal partway of the brain - (spatial vis) Where/spatial information (structural geology)
- Ventral pathway - (object vis) texture information (color etc) (seismic reflection interpretation)
- Milner and Goodale, 1995
- Ungerleider and Haxby, 1994
Object Spatial Imagery Questionnaire
Dealing with complex systems
- Distributed cognition
- Hutchins, 1995 Cognition in the wild
- There is cognition in the tools as well as the brain (community cognition/cognition of dead people)
- Group cognition - shared knowledge among group.
- Wolley et al., 2007 - collaborative learning
- collaboration substitutes for talent/aptitudes and knowledge
- In designing groups, collaboration works if the students work on issues where collaboration is advantageous. For example if each student's job is not what their affinity is.
Springer et al., 1999: Collaboration works. See Reynolds.

Ideas
[edit]
Project
- Assign students to create a movie about a topic. See if the movies are different based on visual vs verbal and spatial vs textural learning.
- See if students learn better from affine or non-affine movies.
- Assessment tools: ??
- Pre-test for learning style
- Pre-assessment of available media (video/images) to sort into object/textural visualizations and spatial visualizations.
- Post analysis of the predominance of object vs spatial visualizations in each movie.
- Survey of students watching movies to determine if their learn more from the affine or non-affine movies.
- What questions? What instruments?
- Academic assessment - topic/subject questions
- Affective assessment - did students think it was helpful.
