Talk:2. Detailed Proposal of Class Project with Pictures
From GeoMod
I really like this project! What assumptions will you have to make, I mean are you going to be adding a specific grain-size, (you mentioned gravel) or a continuum of sizes? Will you make any assumptions about flow? Do you anticipate a threshold where a river can no longer keep up with additions of sediment so flooding increases or do you suspect that any addition of gravel increases flooding? chuck
This is a really good project and it has tons of real world applications. Brad

How do HEC-RAS and GeoRAS work? Do they actually model stream flow and derive the flooded area from that?
Answer- Yup... You can digitise streams in HEC-RAS or import the extracted drainage network from ArcView / ArcMap and run simulation models to see the area which would be flooded. My MPhil dissertation at Cambirdge was on this. If you wish, I can forward you a link of my dissertation and that could give you a better idea of the whole stuff. GeoRAS is an extension used in ArcView which is used to import the HEC-RAS project and after the import the full modelling is done. Mmihir
