Class Structure

  • You will be responsible for reading material in the textbook. The first half of the semester will involve a certain amount of learning basic concepts and terminology. Therefore, there will only be quizzes during the first half of the semester. The pre-class quizzes will help you focus on the material we will cover. These are open book quizzes.
  • Time in lecture will be an introduction to material that will be covered in lab. This will include class discussions, experiments and/or problem solving, and mini-lectures.
  • Lab is a chance to practice applications of the concepts from the text. Each lab is designed to be a self-contained project, although you will find the major concepts have a way of turning up repeatedly all semester.
  • The term project is listed as part of lecture, but will incorporate the skills you learn in both lecture and lab. The project will involve making a webpage using the Wiki software available through Moodle. Instructions and an example of a previous student-produced page will be provided. The topic is your choice, provided it relates to this class in some way. (Topics must be approved by the instructor.)
  • The distribution of the lecture and lab grades is shown below. At the end of the semester, I will assign one grade for the course, with 50% being the score from the lecture component and 50% being the score from the lab component. In my experience, students perform better when they are given many evaluations (rather than just 2 or 3), and the lab almost always helps their overall grade.

Course Grade

  • You will receive the same grade for the lecture and the lab components of this course. 50% of your final course grade will be from lecture and 50% from lab. The importance of each component of lecture and lab is outlined below:

    • No more than 5 questions per chapter for chapters 2-8, 12, 13
    • Using Moodle

  • Term Project: 15%
  • Exams:

    • exam 2: 25%
    • final exam: 25%
Lab grading

  • The field trip is required.
    • Lab exercises/reports: 65%
