From MovieClassroom
What is it? - The MovieClassroom is an online movie editor that lets you create and/or adapt movies from a growing database of video and images. You assemble them into a movie and add your narration.
Who can use it? - Anyone. It's aimed at students but the MovieClassroom is free to use (as long as you cite us) and abide by the Creative Commons by-nc-sa License.
- Note: The video and images are all available if you would like to use other software to make your movies. The MovieClassroom just makes it easier for anyone to slap together a movie from a (relatively) unrestricted source.
Why are we doing this - An explanation.
- Another explanation based on our presentation at the SERC New Tools workshop. - The MovieClassroom
Want to help? - We are seeking volunteer programmers (PHP and MySQL) and people interested in testing the system. Contact User:lurbano.
- This version works very well but has a few idiosyncrasies (for example, if the narration is longer than its assigned clip the words cut off.)
- A much better movie editor with sounder database management system, but still has a few minor bugs.

The MovieClassroom Project
The MovieClassroom permits the creation of captioned movies (and audio narrations) entirely through your standard internet browser.

Applications and Analysis
The object of this and similar projects are to help students learn by creation of material that will assist others in learning material that might be interesting and useful. Why the MovieClassroom explains the logic behind the MovieClassroom project.
We are just beginning to explore the potential of the MovieClassroom in different educational environments. If you have an interest in adapting this software for your own application, let us know.
These pages discuss both the applications and meta-data regarding how well they worked. The Meta links are links that describe the effectiveness of particular applications.
Applications include:
- Showing instructor made movies in the classroom,
- Using student made movies in the classroom (works really well)
- Laboratory assignments (making movies in the computer lab)
- Extra-credit movie-making assignments.
- Quiz-type assignments (making movies instead of quizzes)
